Al-'Adl (العَدْل), "The Just," "The Perfectly Equitable," is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah. It designates the One whose justice is absolute: He wrongs no one, not even by the weight of an atom, and each of His decrees—creation, legislation, retribution—is exact, measured, without excess or deficiency. In a world saturated with injustices, this Name is the foundation of the believer's hope.
What does Al-'Adl mean?
The name Al-'Adl comes from the Arabic root 'ayn-dāl-lām (ع د ل), which expresses equity, balance, and righteousness — giving each one their due, without leaning to either side. The very form of the Name is remarkable: Allah does not merely call Himself "the just," but "Justice" — as if His essence were its source and measure. This Name designates:
- Justice in the divine decrees: everything that Allah ordains — trial or benefit — is precisely measured, never arbitrary.
- Justice in legislation: His commandments establish balance between the rights of Allah, those of the soul, and those of creation.
- Justice in retribution: on the Day of Judgment, no good deed will be overlooked, no fault will be imputed to an innocent one.
Al-'Adl in the Qur'an
Allah says:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ
« Truly, Allah does not wrong anyone, not even by the weight of an atom. » (Surah An-Nisā', 4:40)
And concerning the Day of Judgment:
« On the Day of Resurrection, We will set up the just scales. No soul will be wronged in anything, not even by the weight of a grain of mustard seed. » (Surah Al-Anbiyā', 21:47)
In a hadith qudsi reported by Muslim, Allah says: « O My servants, I have forbidden injustice to Myself and have made it forbidden among you: so do not wrong one another. » An astounding statement: the Almighty, whom none could constrain, has forbidden injustice to Himself — and He commands justice: « Truly, Allah commands justice and excellence » (Surah An-Nahl, 16:90).
Living with Al-'Adl in Daily Life
1. Be Just Even Against Yourself
The Quran sets the bar high: "O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives" (Surah An-Nisā', 4:135). Acknowledging your fault in a dispute, repaying what no one demands: this is justice lived.
2. Refuse Injustice, Even Minor
The servant of Al-'Adl permits himself no oppression "because everyone does it": a falsified grade, delayed wages, a word that burdens an absent person. Since Allah does not wrong by the weight of an atom, how could His servant allow himself more?
3. Be Fair Toward Your Children and Loved Ones
The Prophet ﷺ commanded: "Fear Allah and be equitable among your children." (reported by Al-Bukhārī and Muslim). Justice begins at home: in gifts, visible affection, time given — this is where the sense of fairness of a generation is forged or broken.
Invocation with the Name Al-'Adl
Allah says: "To Allah belong the most beautiful Names. Invoke Him by these Names" (7:180). The believer can invoke: يَا عَدْلُ أَعِذْنِي مِنْ أَنْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ
"O Just One, preserve me from being unjust or from suffering injustice" — like the prophetic invocation when leaving the house: "Allāhumma… may I neither be unjust nor suffer injustice" (reported by Abū Dāwūd and At-Tirmidhī).
Frequently Asked Questions about Al-'Adl
If Allah is Just, why is there so much injustice in the world?
Injustice comes from men, to whom Allah has given freedom — and responsibility — for their actions. His justice is not absent: it is deferred. The scales of the Last Day (21:47) will restore every right; the respite granted to the unjust is not forgetfulness, it is a delay.
Are trials compatible with divine justice?
Yes: trial is not injustice but a measure full of wisdom — purification, elevation, reminder. And everything the believer endures with patience is recorded for him: not a hardship, not a suffering, without Allah erasing faults and elevating degrees.
What is the difference between Al-'Adl and Al-Muqsit?
Al-'Adl is justice of essence, which permeates all divine acts; Al-Muqsit is "The One who establishes equity": He grants justice to the oppressed and distributes with balance. The first describes what Allah is, the second what He does for His creatures.
