Al-'Azīz (العَزِيز), "The Almighty," "The Most Honored," is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah. It appears very frequently in the Quran, often associated with Al-Hakīm (The Wise), to remind us of a fundamental truth: the power of Allah is never brutal or arbitrary — it is inseparable from His wisdom. To meditate on this Name is to understand where true strength comes from, and where the believer must seek his honor.
What does Al-'Azīz mean?
The name Al-'Azīz comes from the Arabic root 'ayn-zāy-zāy (ع ز ز), which expresses power, precious rarity, honor, and invincibility. The 'izza is both the force that cannot be overcome and the dignity that cannot be reached. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- Absolute invincibility: no one can overcome Allah, thwart His decree, or escape from Him. All things are subject to His will.
- Perfect honor: His greatness is inaccessible — nothing and no one can reach Him, diminish Him, or harm Him.
- The source of all power: all strength and honor of creatures are merely a loan coming from Him. Whoever seeks 'izza elsewhere than from Allah seeks it where it cannot be found.
Al-'Azīz in the Quran
This Name appears in the famous passage of Surah Al-Hashr which brings together several of the most beautiful Names:
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّوسُ السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَزِيزُ الْجَبَّارُ الْمُتَكَبِّرُ
« It is He, Allah, there is no deity except Him; the Sovereign, the Most Holy, the Peace, the Bestower of Security, the Overseer, the Almighty, the Irresistible, the Supreme. » (Surah Al-Hashr, 59:23)
Allah also says:
وَلِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
« All power belongs to Allah, and to His Messenger, and to the believers. » (Surah Al-Munāfiqūn, 63:8)
This second verse illuminates the first: power belongs to Allah alone, but He grants it to those who draw near to Him. The honor of the believer comes neither from his wealth, nor from his rank, nor from the approval of men — it flows from his closeness to Al-'Azīz.
Living with Al-'Azīz in Daily Life
1. Seek honor from Allah alone
Whoever knows that all 'izza belongs to Allah ceases to humble himself before creatures to obtain their favor. He remains dignified in need, upright in trial, and never trades his religion for a passing advantage. Obedience elevates; disobedience, even crowned with apparent success, debases.
2. Rely on the Invincible in Trial
Facing an injustice or difficulty that surpasses our strength, this Name is a refuge: no earthly power stands against Allah. The believer acts with the means he possesses, then entrusts the outcome to the One whom nothing can overcome. This is the serenity of tawakkul.
3. Refuse arrogance
Apparent paradox: meditating on Allah's power makes one humble. All human strength — physical, financial, intellectual — is lent and taken back. To glorify oneself in what does not belong to us is to ignore Al-'Azīz; to use it for good is to honor Him.
Invocation with the Name Al-'Azīz
Allah says: "To Allah belong the most beautiful Names. Call upon Him by these Names" (Surah Al-A'rāf, 7:180). One can thus turn to Him by saying: "Yā 'Azīz, You whom nothing can overcome, grant me dignity through Your obedience, do not let me seek honor from Your creatures, and be my support against what overwhelms me." The believer also glorifies this Name in the Quran itself, where so many verses conclude with "wa huwa-l-'Azīzu-l-Hakīm" — "and He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise".
