Al-Jalīl (الجَلِيل), "The Majestic," is the Name of Allah which expresses His majesty: that sovereign greatness which fills hearts with reverence and mixed love. It comes from the same root as the invocation that the Prophet ﷺ loved so dearly: Yā Dhā-l-Jalāli wa-l-Ikrām — "O Possessor of Majesty and Generosity." Before Al-Jalīl, everything that seemed great fades away; and the servant finally finds Someone before whom it is worthy to bow.
What does Al-Jalīl mean?
The name Al-Jalīl comes from the Arabic root jīm-lām-lām (ج ل ل), which expresses greatness, eminence and majesty (jalāl). Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- The majesty of attributes: Allah is qualified by all perfections — knowledge, power, wisdom, mercy — at their absolute degree.
- The greatness that commands reverence: His majesty fills hearts with hayba, that awe mingled with veneration which no creature can inspire.
- Eminence beyond all description: whatever language may say, Allah is even more majestic — "Nothing is like unto Him" (42:11).
Al-Jalīl in the Quran
While the name Al-Jalīl appears in the list of Names reported by At-Tirmidhī, the Quran expresses this majesty through the expression Dhū-l-Jalāl:
كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ * وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
« Everything on it [the earth] is destined to perish. Only the Face of your Lord remains, full of majesty and munificence. » (Surah Ar-Rahmān, 55:26-27)
And the same surah concludes with:
« Blessed be the Name of your Lord, full of majesty and munificence! » (Surah Ar-Rahmān, 55:78)
The Quran always unites the two: jalāl (majesty that inspires reverence) and ikrām (generosity that attracts love). The greatness of Allah does not crush His servants: it is accompanied by a generous welcome for whoever draws near.
The Invocation the Prophet ﷺ Recommended
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hold fast to [the invocation] Yā Dhā-l-Jalāli wa-l-Ikrām." (reported by At-Tirmidhī) And after every prayer, he would say: اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ تَبَارَكْتَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ — "O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Generosity." (Muslim)

1. Rediscovering Reverent Fear in Worship
The hastened prayer is a sign of a heart that has forgotten before Whom it stands. Remembering Al-Jalīl before the takbīr — a few seconds of inner silence — transforms the quality of the entire salāh.
2. Not Debasing Oneself Before Any Creature
Whoever has tasted the majesty of Allah no longer crawls before the powerful, fashions, or opinion. He respects the creatures without fearing them: hayba belongs only to Al-Jalīl, and this is a liberation.
3. Honoring What Allah Has Declared Sacred
Magnifying Allah also means magnifying what He has elevated: His Book which is not treated with negligence, His mosque, His limits. "Whoever honors the sacred things of Allah, that is better for him with his Lord" (Surah Al-Hajj, 22:30).
Invocation with the name Al-Jalīl
Follow the prophetic recommendation: repeat Yā Dhā-l-Jalāli wa-l-Ikrām abundantly in your supplications — "O Possessor of Majesty and Generosity, forgive me, have mercy upon me, fulfill my needs." To invoke Allah by His majesty and His generosity is to knock at the door with the two keys that the Quran itself associates (55:78).
