Al-Muhsī (المُحْصِي), "The One Who Counts All Things," "The One Who Knows the Count of Everything," is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah. Nothing escapes His enumeration: neither the leaves that fall, nor the breaths we take, nor the most discreet of our intentions. Far from crushing the believer, this truth consoles him: none of his efforts, none of his tears, none of his dhikr is ever lost.
What does Al-Muhsī mean?
The name Al-Muhsī comes from the Arabic root hā'-sād-yā' (ح ص ي), which expresses exact enumeration, complete census — al-ihsā'. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- The knowledge of number: Allah knows the exact quantity of all things — the stars, the grains of sand, the beats of every heart.
- The recording of every action: nothing is forgotten or lost; every deed, small or great, is recorded with precision.
- The perfect reckoning of the Day of Judgment: retribution will be given without the slightest injustice, based on a count that lacks nothing.
Al-Muhsī in the Quran
Allah says:
وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عَدَدًا
« …and He has enumerated all things by number. » (Surah Al-Jinn, 72:28)
And concerning the creatures who will appear before Him:
لَّقَدْ أَحْصَاهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا
« He has certainly enumerated them and counted them with an exact count. » (Surah Maryam, 19:94)
The Quran adds: « And all things, We have enumerated them in a clear record » (Surah Yā-Sīn, 36:12). On the day when men discover their book, they will cry out: « What is the matter with this book that it omits neither a small thing nor a great thing without counting it? » (18:49). Such is the meaning of Al-Muhsī: an absolute divine memory, at the service of absolute justice.

Living with Al-Muhsī in Daily Life
1. Cultivating Vigilance of the Heart (murāqaba)
Knowing that every word and every gesture are counted transforms the quality of our days. The believer does not live in morbid fear, but in noble attentiveness: he chooses his words, restrains his anger, tends to his intentions — for Someone is keeping count.
2. Do Not Despise Any Good Action
"Whoever does good, even if it be the weight of an atom, shall see it" (99:7). A smile, a coin given discreetly, a verse meditated upon: everything enters into the account of Al-Muhsī. This certainty gives value to the smallest gestures and consistency in doing good.
3. Take Account of Yourself Before the Day of Reckoning
According to the famous saying attributed to 'Umar ibn al-Khattāb: "Judge yourselves before you are judged." The muhāsaba — the regular examination of one's deeds, in the evening for example — is the believer's response to the Name Al-Muhsī.
Invocation with the name Al-Muhsī
The Prophet ﷺ used to invoke: اللَّهُمَّ حَاسِبْنِي حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا
"O Allah, make my reckoning easy." (reported by Imam Ahmad) — that is, an examination where faults are exposed and then covered, without strict scrutiny. In accordance with verse 7:180, you may also say: "Yā Muhsī, You who forget nothing, do not let any of my good deeds be lost and forgive what You have reckoned against me."
