Al-Mutakabbir (المتكبر) — calligraphie, Les 99 Noms d'Allah | AL-IMEN

Al-Mutakabbir (المُتَكَبِّر), "The Sublime," "He to whom all greatness belongs," is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah. Apparent paradox: the same root that condemns pride in man proclaims the greatness of Allah. This is because the greatness claimed by the creature is a lie — it has nothing by itself — while the greatness of Allah is the simple truth of what He is. To understand this Name is to restore greatness to its sole Owner.

What Does Al-Mutakabbir Mean?

The name Al-Mutakabbir comes from the Arabic root kāf-bā'-rā' (ك ب ر), which expresses greatness. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:

  • He to whom greatness belongs intrinsically: He is great by essence, without needing to magnify Himself — any other claim to greatness is usurpation.
  • He who transcends all deficiency: He is too sublime to be touched by imperfection, fatigue, need, or injustice.
  • He who dominates the arrogant: His greatness humbles whoever unjustly elevates themselves — pharaohs, empires, and ordinary egos.

Al-Mutakabbir in the Qur'an

The Name appears once, in the majestic enumeration of Surah Al-Hashr:

هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّوسُ السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَزِيزُ الْجَبَّارُ الْمُتَكَبِّرُ ۚ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
« It is He, Allah, there is no deity except Him: the Sovereign, the Holy, the Peace, the Reassurer, the Preserving, the Mighty, the Overpowering, the Sublime. Glory be to Allah, far above what they associate with Him. » (Surah Al-Hashr, 59:23)

In a hadith qudsi, Allah says: « Greatness is My garment and majesty is My cloak: whoever disputes with Me over either of them, I will punish them. » (reported by Muslim). Greatness is not forbidden to man on a whim: it is forbidden to him because it simply does not belong to him.

Living with Al-Mutakabbir daily

1. Disarming one's own pride

The Prophet ﷺ said: "He will not enter Paradise who has in his heart the weight of an atom of pride," clarifying that pride consists in "rejecting the truth and despising people." (Muslim). Living with Al-Mutakabbir means hunting down these two reflexes within oneself: refusing to be wrong, looking down on others.

2. Growing through humility

A strange divine economy: "Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah elevates him." (Muslim). Before Al-Mutakabbir, the man who prostrates rises, and the man who elevates himself falls. Humility is not a weakness, it is the only true posture.

3. Do not be crushed before the arrogant

Knowing Al-Mutakabbir also frees one from intimidation: no arrogant creature — individual, power, dominant trend — deserves the believer to tremble before it. The greatness it claims for itself is a fraudulent loan, with a short deadline.

Invocation with the name Al-Mutakabbir

The greatness of Allah rhythms the entire life of the Muslim through the takbīr: اللهُ أَكْبَر — "Allah is the Greatest" — opens every prayer, accompanies every movement, greets every celebration. In accordance with verse 7:180, you can invoke: "Yā Mutakabbir, You to whom all greatness belongs, purify my heart from pride and vanity, and make me great through You, not through myself."

Frequently Asked Questions about Al-Mutakabbir

Why is pride blameworthy in man yet praiseworthy in Allah?

Because truthfulness makes the difference. The man who exalts himself lies: he is created, dependent, mortal. Allah, on the other hand, is truly great: His Name Al-Mutakabbir is not a pretense, it is the exact description of reality.

What is the difference between Al-Kabīr and Al-Mutakabbir?

Al-Kabīr states Allah's greatness in itself — He is the Infinitely Great. Al-Mutakabbir adds the dimension of exclusivity and transcendence: He is the One who stands above all things and to whom alone belongs the right to exalt Himself.

Where does this Name appear in the Qur'an?

Only once as a Divine Name, in verse 59:23 of Surah Al-Hashr, at the pinnacle of an enumeration of Names that the Prophet ﷺ and the believers have meditated upon for fourteen centuries.
