Hadith is the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It is the second source of Shariah after the Quran, and understanding the sciences of Hadith is essential for any Muslim who desires an authentic understanding of Islam.
In this article, I guide you through the fascinating universe of Hadith and its sciences. Whether you are completely new to this field or seeking to deepen your knowledge, you will find here the best resources to progress.
What is Hadith?
Hadith (الحديث) literally means "discourse" or "speech", and refers to the words, actions and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that have been transmitted to us.
Contrary to what some believe, Hadith is not secondary to the Quran. The Quran itself calls for obedience to the Prophet. Allah says: "And whoever obeys the Messenger, certainly obeys Allah" (Quran 4:80).
The Hadiths complement and explain the Quran. For example, the Quran ordains prayer but does not give all the details. It is the Hadith that teaches you how to pray, when to pray, and how to perform each movement.
The Hadiths cover an impressive range of subjects:
- Belief and Tawhid
- Practical jurisprudence
- Morality and ethics
- Advice and wisdom
- Eschatology (end times)
- Edifying stories and miracles
Classification of Hadiths
A crucial element of the science of Hadith is classification. Not all Hadiths are of equal value. Muslim scholars have developed a sophisticated system to evaluate the authenticity of each Hadith:
Hadith Sahih (Authentic)
A Hadith Sahih is a Hadith whose chain of transmission (Isnad) is complete and uninterrupted, whose all narrators are trustworthy (Adl) and possessed of good memory (Dabt), and which contains no defect or anomaly (Illa).
Sahih Hadiths form the basis of Islamic jurisprudence. They can be relied upon to derive laws and beliefs.
Hadith Hassan (Good)
A Hadith Hassan has an acceptable chain of transmission but not as strong as a Sahih. It may have a narrator whose memory is slightly weak, or other minor issues.
Hassan Hadiths can be used to support legal rulings, especially if they are supported by other evidence.
Hadith Daif (Weak)
A Hadith Daif is one that does not meet the conditions of a Sahih or Hassan. Its chain of transmission may be broken, contain an unreliable narrator, or have other defects.
A Weak Hadith cannot be used alone to establish a belief or law. However, some scholars accept it in the areas of exhortations and virtues, with caution.

OrderThe 6 Major Collections (Kutub as-Sitta)
At the beginning of the 3rd century of the Islamic calendar, six scholars compiled the authentic Hadiths. These six collections are considered the most reliable and most comprehensive sources of authentic Hadiths:
1. Sahih Al-Bukhari
Compiled by Imam Muhammad Ibn Ismail Al-Bukhari, this collection contains approximately 7,275 Hadiths (with repetitions). Al-Bukhari applied the strictest criteria. This collection is often considered the most authentic after the Quran. Muslims throughout the world hold it in high regard.
2. Sahih Muslim
Imam Muslim Ibn Al-Hajjaj compiled this collection using a methodology similar to Al-Bukhari. It contains approximately 7,563 Hadiths. Together, Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim form "As-Sahihain" (the Two Sahih), the ultimate reference for authenticity.
3. Jami' At-Tirmidhi
Compiled by Imam Muhammad Ibn Isa At-Tirmidhi, this collection is distinguished by its commentaries evaluating the authenticity of each Hadith. At-Tirmidhi explains the ruling on each Hadith, making it very useful for the student.
4. Sunan Abu Dawud
Imam Abu Dawud As-Sijistani compiled this collection focusing more on matters of jurisprudence. It contains fewer Hadiths than the first two, but they are generally of good quality.
5. Sunan An-Nasa'i
Imam Ahmad An-Nasa'i compiled this collection with meticulous organization. His work is appreciated for its clarity and organization. It contains approximately 5,761 Hadiths.
6. Sunan Ibn Majah
Imam Muhammad Ibn Majah Al-Qazwini compiled this last of the six. Although it contains many useful Hadiths, some of its Hadiths are weak. This is why scholars generally place the first five collections before this one in terms of authenticity.

Sciences of Hadith (Mustalah Al-Hadith)
The Sciences of Hadith constitute a discipline in its own right. It teaches you how to evaluate, classify and understand Hadiths:
The Isnad (Chain of Transmission)
The Isnad is the chain of narrators through which a Hadith has reached us. Example: "Umar said, on the authority of Ali, on the authority of the Prophet".
For a Hadith to be authentic, its chain of transmission must be continuous without any break, and all the narrators must be known for their truthfulness and good memory.
The Matn (Text)
The Matn is the content or the text of the Hadith itself. Scholars analyze the Matn to see if it is consistent with the Quran, the established Sunna, and reason ('Aql).
Hadith Criticism
This discipline teaches how to identify defects and anomalies (Illat) in a Hadith, even if it appears to have a good chain of transmission at first glance.

Why are there multiple Hadith collections?
Different scholars have compiled Hadiths with slightly different criteria and different objectives. Some focus on jurisprudence, others on creed or ethics. Together, they provide a complete picture.
Can I learn Hadith on my own?
Yes, with the right books and resources. However, having a teacher or study group makes the process richer and more interactive.
